When I’m having one of those low energy mornings, I know that I need to make a super energizing breakfast for myself. This is my favourite smoothie for such days.

I’m a huge fan of morning smoothies. For one, they’re easy to make. All you need to do is put some ingredients in the blender, turn it on, and voila. Smoothies are also very portable. You can take a smoothie on your commute, or, if you’re like me, can sip it as you get ready. I also like to know that no matter what happens throughout the day, I’ve had at least four servings of fruits and veggies at breakfast.

Full of super foods, this smoothie actually tastes delicious, and gives me a little kick of energy. The ingredient list may look long, but when you’ve got your measuring spoons out, it’s not such hard work! Here’s the lowdown on what’s in it:

  • Banana – makes it super creamy, and a source of potassium
  • Blueberries – high in antioxidants, and low in sugar
  • Cacao nibs – possibly one of the most concentrated sources of antioxidants on the planet, and very energizing. They’re also a good source of phenylethylamine, which is known as the love chemical
  • Cinnamon – for blood sugar balance
  • Maca – a Peruvian superfood that’s known as an adaptogen, meaning, it will help your body handle stress, will give you energy and will help to regulate hormones
  • Spirulina – high in vitamin A for vision and beautiful skin
  • Almonds– high in vitamin E, which is essential for beautiful skin
  • Spinach – high in vitamin A for skin, protein and antioxidants
  • Flax seeds – high in fibre, omega 3 fatty acids, and lignans, which help to regulate hormones
  • Coconut oil – a medium chain fatty acid that gives you loads of energy without burdening your liver or gallbladder, and also supports the thyroid
