Eat This Salad to Reduce Cravings for Sweets

Strawberry Salad

It’s not like it’s a groundbreaking recipe or anything, but I bought many of the ingredients at the farmers’ market yesterday; with the late spring that we had, strawberries are still very much in season. Here’s a recipe for a delicious salad that will satisfy that sweet/salty/fresh/delicious craving that you may be having. Even better, it may prevent a craving for dessert.

Sweet and Salty Strawberry Salad

This salad is really all about the quality of your ingredients. Use the best organic strawberries, greens, oil and vinegar that you can find.

2 cups spicy greens (mine were a spicy greens mix with turnip greens from the farmers’ market)
1 cup of strawberries, hulled and sliced
3-4 basil leaves, roughly torn
1 thumb-sized piece of parmigiano reggiano, sliced
1.5 tsp balsamic vinegar (I used Acropolis Organics)
1.5 tsp extra virgin olive oil (I used Rallis ice pressed evoo)
1 tsp hemp hearts
Sprinkle of chili flakes and sea salt

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Toss gently and serve. Serves 1.

How this salad reduces cravings

Sweet and salty basically live at opposite ends of the spectrum. You may have noticed that after eating something super salty (like fast food) you crave something super sweet. Because sweet foods have a different effect on the body than salty foods, craving one after the other is like our body’s way of balancing its nutrients. (I’m talking about eating whole foods here – let’s be clear that there are no useful nutrients in fast food.)
